Amalfi - Day 6 - Ravello to Amalfi Previous Next Today our walk begins in Ravello, its hillside setting giving us many views across the valley A colourful ceramic shop Hillside villages And the town square with church D H Lawrence spent some time here writing a book Many tall pine trees scattered around the town Views of the Mediterranean We head for the Villa Cimbrone once frequented by the Bloomsbury Set gardens designed be Ernest William Beckett With help from Harold Peto, Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, trees and floral displays designed by Vita Sackvilla West More views from the terraces Here we are on the Terrace of Infinity With its eighteenth century marble busts Approached through the Temple of Ceres A flower Originally thought to be a quote from D H Lawrence but now known to be from Catallus Mercury's seat with 18th Century bronze statue 'Hermes at Rest' The temple of Bacchus Bacchus Processional pine caterpillars Zooming in The tea room Column of Roman times carved in the Middle Ages Not sure what it is but it looked intriguing No town should be without this type of shop Re-assembling in the square A last look at the ceramic shop - would that fit in a suitcase? Before starting downhill Across the stream at the bottom Looking back up at the villa on the hillside The smallest town in Italy - not much scope for development Old castle - just the walls remaining Romeo and Juliet House Entering the Valla della Ferriere Nature Reserve Looking down on Amalfi Pausing for refreshment in a wayside cafe under lemon trees Before continuing downhill Into the valley An old Roman aqueduct Making a good picture frame We follow the stream downhill Past many derelict paper factories And a curious goose Lemon groves and another derelict paper mill The last steps of the holiday!
