A final check with Heather and Mike is ready to go
Leaving Bulls Cross we head downhill towards Trillgate
Past a house with a dovecot
And down a slippery slope following like sheep
Which also follow each other
Up the other side, another slippery slope
Then a narrow road where we take to the grass verge to avoid the postman
A stop for Mike to read from Cider with Rosie. "The little Jim Fern, sitting beside me, looks up from his ruined pages. "Ain't you a good scholar! You and your Jack. I wish I was a good scholar like thee." He gives me a sad, adoring look, and I begin to feel much better."
Little Jim's signature on his walk page, and his advert for guiding people around the Slad Valley (with personal narrative)
Our first walks book (1995).
Selsley Common October 1995 on our book launch. "Little" Jim is on the right.
Then a brief encounter with race horses from the nearby Tom George yard
Before we pass the cottages used in Cider with Rosie by the BBC in the 1970s
An old farmhouse
Looking down into the Dillay Valley
Crossing the stream on some wooden sleepers
Fuzzy picture from 1995 - New footbridge and stile in distance - erected after Group's request. Les Woollerton, group footpath sec at the time. Before picture ....
... and After! Very well used footbridge with a hand rail
A short climb uphill
With views back up the valley
A reminder that we are now on the Laurie Lee Wildlife Walk
As we follow a muddy woodland track
Looking over the valley at the racing yard
Round a small green
Bringing us to another muddy track
On to Swifts Hill and more words from Mike, including an extract from Cider with Rosie
... the famous book
Views over to Slad School, Pub and Church
And down into the valley
Now heading downhill
An old Austin car bringing back memories - for some
As our back markers follow us down the road
Round a pond below Elcombe
Mistletoe flourishing in the apple trees
Now heading towards Steanbridge
Past Jones' pond
A steep climb through Slad
Past the War Memorial
On uphill
And back through the woods to Bulls Cross
