Belted Galloways grazing the hillside at Barrow Wake
As we take in the views down into the valley
Before Sue leads us off along the Cotswold Way
Towards the Air Balloon
And on to Crickley Hill
Where we continue along the Cotswold Way
Over the Cheltenham Road
Then up to Leckhampton Hill
Where we have extensive views down into the valley again
As we stand by the topograph
Gorse starting to bloom
We then make our way along a muddy track on the top
Seems to have lost some of its meaning
Making our way down a shallow valley
Where we find a pumping house and Andy can't resist a look inside at the old pumping gear
Installed c1860 to supply water to Salterley Grange - now supplying Hartley Farm
Info from Jill - Salterley Grange, built by Henry Camps on his estate c. 1860, bought by Birmingham City Corporation in 1907 which in 1908 they converted in to a municipal sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis, chalets were built in its grounds. The sanatorium became a chest hospital in the 1960s. It closed in the early 1970s and by 1978 the chalets had been converted and sold as housing. Old pump house. Birmingham City Corporation sunk a well here to supply fresh water to the nearby Salterley Grange Sanatorium. The well is 148 ft. deep with a high water level of around 18ft in winter, dropping to less than 1ft in summer. The pump was originally powered by paraffin. Today the well supplies water to Hartley Farm.
They mean business
We soon reach Coberley
And, after lunch, climb out of the village
Encountering some strange sheep - Manx Loaghtans, a primitive breed
A less primitive cow
Our path soon bringing us back to the Car Park
