Tewkesbury walk - Wednesday 3 August 2016 Previous Next We start to gather round for Enid's walk. (Peg has only come for the coffee!) We then walk through the town, looking at the medieval banners which adorn Tewkesbury every summer. Each one is the arms of someone involved in the Battle of Tewkesbury Very impressive I couldn't find any cat pictures today but at least I got 3 herrings (who has herrings in their coat of arms??) Attractive hanging baskets everywhere We walk past the front of the Abbey Even side streets have banners flying And another reminder of the Battle of Tewkesbury We reach the river and look across The system of communication across the river is very sophisticated. This is what you bang. A reminder of the floods 9 years ago Does everyone know what "elvering" is? Maybe only if you are local. The church at Deerhurst a few fields away We walk on a raised flood embankment The river is just there, with the occasional boat going past. We gather together in Deerhurst Some go inside Odda's chapel Then we walk round to the church. Note the flood gates - after Noah, you can't be too careful. This laid-back owl would certainly scare me off the vegetables The architecture of the church is discussed It is beautifully decorated with roses, maybe a wedding at the weekend The famous Deerhurst Angel - good job there's a sign - it's not easy to see After coffee in the churchyard, we cross fields - lots of beans looking very black Some colourful buildings on the edge of Tewkesbury - must have got planning permission though. A small copse Teasels (I mainly took this picture to test out whether my new camera could do close-ups) And return round the back of the abbey to Tewkesbury.
