White Horse walk - Saturday 20 April 2019 Previous Next Walkers Hill from Walkers Hill CP, the start of today's walk Lambs keep an eye on us as we wait to start A gate takes us out onto the Downs Today is all about rolling countryside And distant views Local wildlife Our route takes us along a narow ridge Then on a chalky track Looking across to the Marlborough Downs And down the ridge to Salisbury Plain But we head into the valley where blossom is appearing in the cottage gardens Eventually coming out at the Kennet and Avon Canal Where it is the weekend of the Devises to Westminster canoe race And narrow boats are plying backwards and forwards Lunch is spent watching canoeists duck to go under a low swingbridge But we witness no decapitations And we continue along the towpath Where there are plenty of interesting sights Including bridges to walk under Aren't all cat ladies crazy? Andrew finds something to play on More boats here A familiar couple on top of that boat Not open so we can't barge in Time for us to leave the canal As we head up into the village of Alton Barnes Would have like to have stopped but we pressed on Saxon church partly concealed by trees An unusual turnstile An unusual stile Old thatched cottage With an old barn filled with farm machinery Now heading uphill where we catch sight of one of the White Horses More views down into the valley Walkers Hill ahead Before we head down to the car park Photos and captions by Richard, uploaded by Sally
